Primo Levi: The Matter of a Life (Jewish Lives) by Berel Lang,http://www.amazon.com/dp/0300137230/ref=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_Mmh4sb06TFRT8YSS
Presents the life of the Italian Jewish author, examining his dual intellectual role as a scientist and writer and the legacy of his works in which he details his life as a survivor of Auschwitz.
Professor Lang has developed an unusual plan to explore the life of an unusual writer. Modeling the approach in part on one of Levi’s books, Lang begins with a chapter called “The End” and concludes with one called “The Beginning” followed, naturally, by “Preface.”
In 1943, twenty-four-year-old Primo Levi had just begun a career in chemistry when, after joining a partisan group, he was captured by the Italian Fascist Militia and deported to Auschwitz.

Travels in Hyperrreality by Umberto Eco. From the publisher: Eco displays in these essays the same wit, learning, and lively intelligence that delighted readers of The Name of the Rose and Foucault’s Pendulum. His range is wide, and his insights are acute, frequently ironic, and often downright funny. From me: Shaped my view of myself and my fellow Americans. Excellent.
Travels in Hyperreality by Umberto Eco. This is a great book for Americans especially - such a unique and potentially mind-broadening experience of American culture. gg

Giuseppe Mazzotta brings Dante and his masterpiece to life in this exploration of the man and his fascinating works. This book offers a critical reading of 'The Divine Comedy'. Mazzotta establishes the poetic and political circumstances of 'The Divine Comedy'. He situates the three sections of the poem within the intellectual and social context of the late Middle Ages, and he explores the political, philosophical and theological topics with which Dante was particularly concerned.

Reading Dante: From Here to Eternity by Prue Shaw. Shaw communicates the imaginative power, the linguistic skill and the emotional intensity of Dante’s poetry—the qualities that make the Commedia perhaps the greatest literary work of all time and not simply a medieval treatise on morality and religion.

The Virgin Reading (c1505). Vittore Carpaccio (Italian, c1465–1525/1526). National Gallery of Art. Carpaccio was a painter of the Venetian school, who studied under Gentile Bellini. He is best known for a cycle of nine paintings, The Legend of Saint Ursula. His style was somewhat conservative, showing little influence from the Humanist trends that transformed Italian Renaissance painting during his lifetime. He was influenced by the style of Antonello da Messina and Early Netherlandish art.
