The Infatuations: Javier Marias, Margaret Jull Costa: "From the award-winning Spanish writer Javier Marías comes an extraordinary new book that has been a literary sensation around the world: an immersive, provocative novel propelled by a seemingly random murder that we come to understand—or do we?—through one woman’s ever-unfurling imagination and infatuations."

The Infatuations is a philosophical mystery with more introspection than action. The mystery gradually unravels as a woman peels back layers of her perceptions to learn the truth behind a murder. Along the way, she explores loss, grief and the posturing that separates individuals.
The Infatuations, by Javier Marias. Breakfasting daily at a Madrid cafe where she observes fellow patrons, Mariá Dolz offers condolences to a widow whose husband has been shockingly murdered, an act that leads to a new relationship and disturbing insights into the crime.

10 Buzzworthy Novels This Fall. The Infatuations" by Javier Marías, translated by Margaret Jull Costa "Blindingly intelligent, engagingly accessible--it seems there's nothing Marías can't make fiction do. No wonder he's perennially mentioned as a potential Nobel laureate." An apparently random street murder sparks musings on shades of guilt and the mutability of truth in the distinguished Spanish writer's latest ("Your Face Tomorrow: Poison, Shadow, and Farewell," "2007," etc.).

The Infatuations by Javier Marias: A very different and compelling book about a women tragically drawn into the lives of a married couple that she likes to observe as they meet everyday in a small, quaint cafe where she eats breakfast alone. Written from the woman's point of view, the author takes us into the deep, dark thoughts that we don't like to aknowledge, much less share. It leaves us questioning what we would do in the same situation. I really enjoyed this book. Introspective, thought provoking, and dark.
