On the day before he died in 1954 (at the age of 84), Matisse sketched a small portrait of Delectorskaya with a ballpoint pen. In her biography of the Matisse, Hilary Spurling notes that the artist held the drawing “out at arm’s length to assess its quality before pronouncing gravely, ‘It will do.’"
