Dark Places: A Novel: Gillian Flynn: 9780307341570: Amazon.com: Books. Intense, well-written page-turner. Gone Girl is my favorite of her three novels, but this one is darker and probably the better book.

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. By far, my favorite of her three novels.
#DarkPlaces - Gillian Flynn. All of her books are great.
Lindsay Hunter’s debut novel tells the heartbreaking story of an unraveling friendship between two young women, Baby Girl and Perry, as they careen through a world troubled by suburban poverty, alcoholic parents, and the attentions of a sinister internet stalker. As unnerving and irresistible as the baddest of bad influences, Ugly Girls is not to be missed.

Ugly Girls by Lindsay Hunter Hardcover, 232 pages / Lindsay Hunter's novel follows best friends Perry and Baby Girl as they shoplift, ditch school and steal cars. But critic Annalisa Quinn says Ugly Girls has more shock value than substance.

Ugly Girls by Lindsay Hunter | I read this gritty novel just a couple of days ago. I felt like it really had no plot - just two friends, or rather frenemies, who spend their days doing random shit, being horrible to each other and being horrible to everyone else. And then when it ended, it was so abrupt that I had to flip back to see if I missed something. However, the author is very good at describing flawed characters and their bleak lives.
Ugly Girls is far and away one of my favorite books of 2014. It tells the story of Baby Girl and Perry, two young women trying to define themselves as well as their friendship against the backdrop of suburban poverty. Lindsay Hunter’s incredible mastery of language and storytelling is on full display in this debut novel, which also interweaves the voices of an alcoholic mother, a prison guard, and a threatening internet stalker. Ugly Girls is gritty and realistic, beautiful and deranged.
Ugly Girls: A Novel by Lindsay Hunter. Perry & Baby Girl are best friends. Their friendship is woven from the threads of never-ending dares & power struggles, their loyalty fierce. They spend their nights sneaking out, stealing cars for joyrides & appearing hard to the world. Jamey, an alleged high school student, has been pining after Perry, following Perry & Baby Girl’s every move. When they agree to meet Jamey face-to-face, they quickly realize he’s far from the shy teen they thought he was.

Great book, better than the movie. “She reminded me that the world was really one bee yard, and the same rules work fine in both places. ..Act like you know what you're doing, even if you don't. Above all, send the bees love. Every little thing wants to be loved.” ― Sue Monk Kidd, The Secret Life of Bees

The Secret Life of Bees (Sue Monk Kidd) a must-read; the movie actually kept beautifully to the novel and did it justice. Read the novel first and watch the characters come alive. I read this years ago for book club.

11/22/63, Stephen King. This isn't typical Stephen King: it's crazy and creepy, but nothing horror-ish here. It's long, but it goes fast.
