Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria Hungary & Bohemia, the son and heir-apparent of Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria & King of Hungary & Bohemia, & his wife Empress-Queen consort, Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie “Sissi” (1837-assassinated 1898). His death, a suicide with his mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera, at his Mayerling hunting lodge in 1889 made international headlines, fueled international conspiracy rumours & ultimately may have sealed the long-term fate of the Habsburg monarchy.
Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria, Rudolf (21 August 1858 – 30 January 1889), who was Archduke of Austria and Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary, was the heir apparent to the Austro-Hungarian Empire from birth. In 1889, he died in a suicide pact with his mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera, at the Mayerling hunting lodge. The ensuing scandal made international headlines and remains a cause of speculation more than a century later.

Portrait of Anne of Hungary and Bohemia by Hans Maler (1519) Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid. Maler painted the Queen’s portrait on various occasions and the present panel is among the most successful of these images, using a type of presentation to be found in other portraits by his hand. Anne is depicted half-length against a light blue background, whose lower part is more illuminated. The precise brushstroke is used to convey the luxurious details of her hat, dress and jewels.

A portrait of Queen Mary of Hungary and Bohemia, wife of Louis II, and daughter of Philip I of Castile and his wife Joanna "the Mad". Mary was Governor of the Netherlands for almost 25 years. She was also the guardian and aunt of Christina of Denmark, who turned down Henry VIII's proposal, citing her deficiency of heads to spare! Queen Mary was an accomplished woman and a significant, if now forgotten, figure in 16th century European life.

Emperor Franz Joseph I – 1848. This rather improbable silhouette became fashionable in the 1830s and lasted until c.1855-1860. Some men wore corsets (which seems to be the case here); Winterhalter portraits of the Prince Consort display similar trends.
