Wow, Encore is the spitting image of him!! Swaps was the great-great-grandfather of Encore's dam, Tettau. An even higher honour, in my opinion, than his Derby win and 1956 Horse of the Year, LOL! Spitting Image, Thoroughbred, Swap, Lol, Grandfather

A full sister to Busher, Striking was another exceptional broodmare and Hall of Fame racehorse. She was born at Claiborne, after being sold by Idle Hour. Her Nasrullah filly, Glamour, foaled the Round Table colt, Poker, damsire to Seattle Slew. Striking's Ambiorix filly, Bases Full, was 4th dam to Smarty Jones. Glamour's sister's blood produced Mineshaft. Without Striking and Busher, there would have been no Slew...and then what? Smarty Jones, Horse Names, Racehorse

Busher - After retirement, $150,000 bought her for Maine Chance Farm, where she foaled Jet Action (by Jet Pilot) who was her only progeny to race. Today, at Aqueduct, the Busher Stakes for 3 yr old fillies is still run in her honour.

Busher and Johnny Longden at Washington Park in Aug 1945. She set a record winning that Handicap, beating Preakness winner and fellow Encore relative, Polynesian (sire of Native Dancer). Late that year, she developed leg swelling and did not race as a 4 yr old. Raced once at 5, she finished 5th and was retired. Washington Park, Man O

Busher beats her rival, Durazna, in a 1 mile match race at Washington Park. In 1945, Busher had been called "unbeatable," but loaded with 128 lbs in the Beverly Handicap, she lost to Durazna & "Iceman" George Woolf (who beat War Admiral with Seabiscuit in 1938). Busher "always got revenge." Thing 1, The Beverly, Girl Running

Beginning her career under Eddie Arcaro, Busher won 3 stakes in 1944 to win Champion 2 yr old. WWII put a hold on racing until May of 1945, so Idle Hour sold racing stock and Louis B. Meyer bought himself another champion for $50,000. She won him 9 stakes races that year. 2 years later, she retired due to injury, Meyer auctioned his favourite mare, along with his other 60 racers; he had lost heart for the sport when she couldn't recover. Busher, a War Admiral daughter, was another champion produced by Idle Hour Farm. Col. Bradley was not a fan of War Admiral's "hot" sireline, but he relented due to the stud's resemblance to Sweep and was rewarded -- Champion 2 & 3 yr old Filly and 1945 US Horse of the Year. She died delivering her 5th foal in 1955, but was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1964. Her 1st Jet Pilot colt, Jet Action, sired a Myrtle Charm filly, My Charmer, Seattle Slew's grand-dam. Baby League was the 3rd foal of the French-bred La Troienne, the Teddy daughter who founded a dynasty. Her sire, Bubbling Over, the 1926 Ky Derby winner also owned by Col. Bradley of Idle Hour Farm, was a grandson of the amazing Sweep. She foaled both Striking, by Nasrullah, grand-dam of Poker, and Busher, by War Admiral, grand-dam to Fair Charmer. ESPN's Seattle Slew documentary. In 1977, this "arrogant bully" was the 10th of 11 horses to capture the Triple Crown-and America's heart and the only one to ever do it undefeated. Fascinating to me, though he is close on both sides of Encore's pedigree, he comes through his son, AP Indy on top, but a daughter, Slew The Queen, on the bottom. He was a $17,500 yearling owned by amateurs who caught everyone off guard with a heart of pure fire. Clydesdale Horses, Breyer Horses, Horse Love, Seattle

Myrtlewood, Blue Larkspur's greatest daughter out of the French mare, Frizeur, who was a Broomstick granddaughter. In 1935, she was blowing the 3 yr old world away (during Seabiscuit's years but he hadn't taken off). As a 4 yr old, she won seven stakes races and set track records. In 1979, she was given her rightful place in the Racing Hall of Fame. Her great-granddaughter, Myrtle Charm, foaled the Jet Action filly, Fair Charmer. Horse Boarding

Blue Larkspur's trainer, "Derby Dick" was not known for being kind to his horses. The stallion gave his all anyway, winning 3 two-year-old Stakes in 1928, after which he was kicked in the Belmont Futurity. He was trained hard that winter and won 3 major 1929 stakes, including the Belmont, where he was again kicked & the wound was infected. He may have won the Derby if the asst. trainer hadn't shod him incorrectly that day. He won 2 more races at four before his 2nd bowed tendon retired him. Older Horses

BL daughters were particularly effective crossed w/ Calumet Farm's stallion Bull Lea. One of Warren Wright's founding selection factors for his broodmare band in the early days of Calumet was to purchase stakes-winning daughters of Blue Larkspur. Larkspur was damsire to Buckpasser's mama, Busanda (by War Admiral) and her mate in that match, Tom Fool, was a Bull Dog grandson (through the mare, Gaga). So there was something to it... 3 yr old Blue Larkspur at Saratoga. Blue Larkspur - Considered the best of Idle Hour Farm's 127 stakes winners, he was the unofficial 1929 US Horse of the Year. A good racehorse plagued by bad training, he nonetheless tried his heart out, earning him two bowed tendons. Inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1957, he is also believed to carry the "X Factor," a gene that resulted in extra large hearts.
