The American Pit Bull Terrier was bred in the 19th-century United States for sport dog fighting. It is now banned entirely in Sweden; must be identified by microchip implant, muzzled, & neutered to be allowed in the United Kingdom; and is also prohibited in some areas of its homeland. Although some unscrupulous breeders have continued to train Pit Bulls as killers, dogs properly trained from an early age can be fawning companions. Nonetheless, they are not recommended near children.
