IT LOOKS like a giant phallus, grows up to tall and sometimes smells like a corpse. But the incredibly rare spectacle of a titan arum, or corpse flower, in full bloom in the Cairns Botanic Gardens has the world's flower lovers abuzz.
Neglected Beauty : Cadaverous Beauty : The Corpse Flower : Amorphophallus titanum (Araceae) - One of nature's jewels that so many may never see, with a smell that's rancid. The largest flower in the world was blooming in Blanco , Veracruz, Mexico. Two meters (6 5/8 feet) high and weighing 75 kilos (165lbs). It has the peculiarity of blooming three days every 40 years. This species, from western Sumatra in Indonesia, has the largest floral structure in the world (its not a single flower, but many flowers in one structure, called an inflorescence). Corpse Flower- The world's largest flower is also one of the world's worst-smelling flowers. It is native to Borneo and has a life span of 40 years but blooms only a few times. It emits a smell similar to rotten eggs or a dead animal.
