Anne McCaffrey This is an epic sci-fi book cover. I have probably read every one of her books. She was perhaps the first sci-fi/ fantasy author that I got into back in Jr. High and helped begin my lifelong cultish book addiction.

I'm not a huge Sci-Fi fan, but Anne McCaffrey's Pern books took me to a world that I just LOVE. Not a "high tech" Sci-Fi. A planet with dragons and people that ride them. Good characters. A great mental escape.
