This Is the Average Credit Score in America (and It's Probably Better Than You Think

According to ValuePenguin, the average credit score in America is 695, which falls into the average/fair category. Preferably, we'd like to see as many people as possible at 720 or higher, which is where the best deals are to be had from lenders. Nonetheless, based on statistics dating back to 2005, the average credit score of 695 in 2015 is a new high and a full eight points higher than the average credit score of 687 during 2010 (which was undoubtedly hurt by the recession).

Every year, credit reporting bureau Experian releases its “State of Credit” report, giving us a snapshot of where the average credit score stands for U.S. consumers. This year’s report shows an improvement of 4 points over 2015.

Cleveland drops to 44 on Experian’s national ranking of credit scores. State of Credit 2012 gives a glimpse into the financial picture of our nation.


A good credit score is something that we should all strive for. In previous articles, I’ve discussed the average credit scores and ways to boost it. Ever since I raised my credit score by 168 points in an eight-month timeframe, I’ve been focused on trying to get it even higher.
