The Battle of Fredericksburg, 150 Years ago today - Meade and Gibbon Advance - 13 DEC 1862. The only successful assault by the Union Army. The initial breach of the Rebel line was not followed up and, as a result, the Confederate forces were able to regroup and repel the attack.
This is Major General Ambrose Burnside, the commander of the Union army of the Potomac. He is best known for leading the army to a crushing defeat at the Battle of Fredericksburg and for his distinctive facial hair, which later became known as the, you guessed it, sideburn.
