10 incredible images of black holes

Black holes are some of the most mysterious objects in the universe — what is left behind after a star has collapsed. NASA has compiled several dramatic images of what are believed to be black holes in space.

Black holes have properties that resemble dynamics of both solids and liquids

In theoretical physics you can have different planes that behave like black holes and they are called black branes. When black branes are folded into multiple dimensions they form a 'blackfold', which new research shows has a relationship between gravity and fluid mechanics and solid-state physics. UPDATE: Hawking’s new suggestion is that the apparent horizon is the real boundary–a place that grows or shrinks according to how much matter is consumed or radiation is given off. Ultimately, as Hawking writes, “The absence of event horizons means that there are no black holes — in the sense of regimes from which light can’t escape to infinity.” - Credit: NASA - Read more:

Monster black hole is the largest and brightest ever found

An artist's illustration of the black hole at the heart of a quasar in the distant universe. The biggest black hole known to exist lives in the nearby galaxy M87. It's 2,000 times bigger than the Milky Way's supermassive black hole.

In August of 2007, astronomers located a gigantic hole in the universe. This empty space, stretching nearly a billion light-years across, is devoid of any matter such as galaxies, stars, and gas, and neither does it contain the strange and mysterious dark matter, which can be detected but not seen. The large void in the Constellation Eridanus appears to be improbable given current cosmological models. God told Job He was beyond the empty space... The Book of Job in the Holy Bible

What If? 22 Crazy Hypothetical Questions (and their Answers)

If you were to take a step into a small black hole, your body would most closely resemble toothpaste being extruded out of the tube. Tidal forces are so strong at a black hole's threshold (called the "event horizon") that they would stretch your body into a string of atoms as you fell into the abyss. But if you fell into a somewhat larger black hole with less extreme tides, you could maintain your internal structure. Einstein's theory of time dilation suggests that if you looked forward…

ESA’s Herschel infrared space telescope has made an unexpected discovery: a dark hole in space. The hole has provided astronomers with a surprising glimpse into the end of the star-forming process. A cloud of bright reflective gas known to astronomers as NGC 1999 sits next to a black patch of sky. For most of the 20th century, such black patches have been known to be dense clouds of dust and gas that block light from passing through.
