Last of the real-life female samurai": Nakano Takeko (中野 竹子, 1847-1868) ~ a female warrior (女武芸者, onna-bugeisha, "one who practiced the art of war"), who fought and died during the Boshin War. She was trained in the martial, literary, calligraphy and other arts and worked with her adoptive father as a martial arts instructor during the 1860s. During the Battle of Aizu (part of the Boshin War) in autumn 1868
