Great book for ideas, word choice, details for grades 4-9. The imagery that Dahl creates through his choice of words is superb. What a terrific mentor text.

"Sometimes Matilda longed for a friend, someone like the kind courageous people in her books. It occurred to her that, like talking dragons and princesses with hair long enough to climb, such people might only exist in storybooks."

Fantastic Mr Dahl --- Armed with a flask of coffee, Dahl would head for the hut at around 10.30am and write until lunchtime and a gin and tonic at midday. After a break for reading he would clock in again around 4pm for a couple more hours, though never for too long, as he maintained that a writer couldn't work 'particularly long hours because he can't - he becomes inefficient'

Reading Week 2014. Theme was Experiment with a New Book. Since we read The Witches by Roald Dahl, I had my students write about an event in the story that made them bubble over with excitement, happiness or laughter.
