"Christ the Redeemer" sculpture in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dedicated October 12, 1931 and completed October 12, 2006. Sits at the peak of Corcovado Mtn. in Tijuca National Forest Park. Construction took nine years from 1922 to 1931. It weighs 635 tons and is 2300 ft high. A symbol of Brazilian Christianity, the statue has become an icon for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone.
