Part of a large collection of a few hundred photographs and notes on the archaeology of the Shimabara Peninsular. Shiro Amakusa a young sixteen year old Christian samurai, with a Christian army of 30,000 peasants and samurai (Shimabara Rebellion) fought against the Shogun’s army of 140,000 men. The battle lasted for four months. With the help of the Dutch, the Christian army were defeated, and the survivors beheaded. Christianity in Japan went underground.
