September 15, 1963 · Birmingham, Alabama Virgil Lamar Ware, 13, was riding on the handlebars of his brother’s bicycle when he was fatally shot by white teenagers. The white youths had come from a segregationist rally held in the aftermath of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing.

I knew about the Civil Rights Memorial by Maya Lin in advance of my visit. I still wasn't prepared for the power of the pieces and the space that make it up. Deeply moving and unforgettable.

Viola Liuzzo was murdered on March 25, 1965 after the Selma-to-Montgomery Civil Rights March. She is the only white woman honored at the Montgomery Civil Rights Memorial.
