Willa chappell Brown was not only the first licensed female black pilot, she also co-founded the national airmen’s association of america, an organization whose mission was to get african americans into the united states air force. in 1940, she and her first husband, lieutenant Cornelius R. Coffey started the Coffey school of Aeronautics, where some of the approximately 200 pilots who trained at the school are known to us as the “Tuskegee Airmen.”
Janet Waterford Bragg. Earned a degree in nursing from Spellman, enrolled in the Curtiss Wright Aeronautical School where she was the only female in an aircraft mechanics class of 24 black males. Did postgrad at Loyola & the U. of Chicago while working as a nurse to save money to buy 1st of 3 planes. Passed the flight test at Tuskegee black pilot training but was denied the commercial pilot license. Tried to join WASPs during WWII but rejected because of race.
