Elected to the state assembly in 1965, David Dinkins later served as president of elections for New York City, as city clerk, and as Manhattan borough president before he successfully ran for mayor in 1989. Both ethnic tensions and crime increased during his term, and while he was the first black mayor of New York, he became the first black mayor of a major U.S. city to be denied reelection.
