David O. Selznick (May 10, 1902 - June 22, 1965) was an American film producer. He is best known for having produced Gone with the Wind (1939) and Rebecca (1940), both of which earned him an Oscar for Best Picture.
Walter Plunkett originally designed Scarlett’s dress for Ashley’s birthday party in the jade green color described by Margaret Mitchell in the novel. David O. Selznick wanted to emphasize Scarlett’s shame in the scene, and ordered the dress to be changed to red. With Mitchell’s permission, Plunkett redesigned the costume. Courtesy A.M.P.A.S
