Becoming an "Adult Orphan" can be a very painful transition. The parent-child bond is perhaps the most fundamental of all humanities and now that bond is torn. Someone who loved you unconditionally and cared for you as no one else could have is now gone. You may also feel extreme sadness because the loss of a parent triggers secondary losses, such as the loss of a grandparent to your children.

I think this is so true when anticipating the death of a terminally ill loved one. You knows it's going to happen, but there's still a sense of shock and denial when it does.
