Blazing a hiking and biking trail from Detroit's Belle Isle to the Wisconsin border may not quite be of Lewis & Clark proportions. But Michigan's plan to give hikers and bikers a clear, 924-mile path from one corner of the state to the other is no small deed. Here's why state natural resources and tourism officials think the newly mapped trail will boost Pure Michigan.

Next spring, when Detroit takes the leading role in a national TV commercial as part of the state's Pure Michigan tourism campaign, don't expect it to look like other Pure Michigan spots.
