Triheptanoin is a triglyceride of C7 fatty acids. It is a particularly good anaplerotic agent as it can be given in large quantities without accompanying electrolytes. Triheptanoin is also used in the alleviation of ventricular hypertrophy and to improve myocardial glucose oxidation, as well as to treat inherited metabolic diseases, skin conditioning, surfactants, viscosity controlling agents, etc.
Dextran Sulfate Sodium Salt (DSS) is a polyanionic derivative of Dextran. This DSS induces experimental colitis and promotes colitis-associated cancer in rodents. Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), primarily including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are studied using a variety of chemically induced colitis models in rodents that have become essential to our advancing understanding of these diseases.
Fidaxomicin(OPT-80; PAR-101) is a new class of narrow spectrum macrocyclic antibiotic drug; also the selective eradication of pathogenic Clostridium difficile with minimal disruption to the multiple species of bacteria that make up the normal, healthy intestinal flora.
Deoxynivalenol is a stable mycotoxins found in cereals infected by certain fungal species and causes adverse health effects in animals and human such as vomiting, diarrhea and reproductive toxicity. In the scientific field, there is a progressive awareness about the potential implications of food processing on mycotoxins especially concerning thermal treatments.
T-705 (favipiravir) is an antiviral molecule that is being developed for the treatment of influenza virus infections but that exerts also activity against a number of unrelated RNA viruses, including bunyaviruses, arenaviruses and flaviviruses. It is converted to its active form T-705 ribofuranosyl 5’-tri-phosphate by cellular enzymes, and this metabolite inhibits the influenza polymerase without affecting the synthesis of cellular RNA and DNA.
The Smallest Drugs Here is the updated version of the "smallest drugs" collection that I did the other day. Here are the criteria I used: the molecular weight cutoff was set, arbitrarily, at aspirin's 180. I excluded the inhaled anaesthetics, only allowing things that are oils or solids in their form of use. As a small-molecule organic chemist, I only allowed organic compounds - lithium and so on are for another category
