June 25th "Think of the wonderful circles in which our whole being moves and from which we cannot escape no matter how we try. The circler circles in these circles." The author of fantasy and horror, jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist E.T.A. Hoffmann died today, 190 years ago, at the age of 46 in Berlin. Being almost a prophet without honour in his own land, his admirers range from Balzac and Hugo to Pushkin and Dostoevski to Edgar Allan Poe and Wagner.
