A view of Middle Row, East Grinstead, photographed by William Harding in 1864. The building on the right belonged to George Bailye, a tailor and hairdresser who resided in East Grinstead's High Street. The town well and pump, enclosed by railings, can be seen in front of Bailye's tailor shop. William Harding was managing a tobacconist's shop in Middle Row in the early 1860s around the time he took up photography. East Grinstead Photographers

The east end of the High Street, looking east. Ye Dorset Arms, once the town's principal coaching inn, had many changes of proprietor at this time, and its brickwork had already suffered the indignity of white paint. The handsome Dorset House next door is dated 1705. The motor car has one of the earliest registration plates (London, 1904) and may have been one of the first seen in East Grinstead.
