At this very Marae (meeting house) and grounds in 1840 a document was signed that made New Zealand a part of the British Empire, guaranteeing Māori rights to their land and gave Māori the rights of British subjects. Because of a difference in translation between the Maori and English version, this has led to debate over exactly what was agreed to at Waitangi.
