A picture of East German leader Erich Honecker kissing Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev became famous and an icon of the Cold War. The passionate kiss depicted was in a satirical mural entitled "My God, help me to survive this deadly love", (German: Mein Gott, hilf mir, diese tödliche Liebe zu überleben), sometimes referred to as the Fraternal Kiss (German: Bruderkuß), on the Berlin Wall (East Side Gallery), painted by artist Dmitri Vrubel.
Under the leadership of Erich Honecker, members of the Politburo, the highest decision-making body of the SED, appeal to the general secretary of the CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) for help in removing Walter Ulbricht. They argue for the necessity of his departure, pointing to mistakes he had made in economic and foreign policy.
