Dr. Georgia E. Lee Patton (1864 - 1900) was born a slave in Grundy County, TN. With the help of her siblings, she attended Central Tennessee College in Nashville. In 1893, she earned her medical degree from the Meharry Medical Department of Central Tennessee College as one of the school's 2 female graduates. Settling in Memphis, she opened a private practice & became the city's 1st black female doctor. She also became the 1st black woman to receive a physician's & surgeon's licenses in TN.
