1981_10_28 $.20 The Traditional Christmas Stamp featured the painting Madonna and Child by Botticelli. The painting is located in the Art Institute of Chicago. Due to a pending rate change of unknown date at the time of printing, this stamp was issued without a denomination. This stamp and the 1981 contemporary Christmas stamp (item CH52) became the first stamps issued with the new 20c first class postage rate.
This stamp depicts three firefighters at Ground Zero after the attack of September 11, 2001. The stamp paid the 34-cent postage rate for first class mail. The additional 11-cents went to a fund to provide financial assistance to families of emergency relief personnel killed or permanently disabled as a result of the September 11th attacks.
On October 21, 2010, the second Forever Stamp, featuring pinecones on evergreen trees, was issued for the Christmas season - These stamps are always sold at the current first-class postage rate and are always valid for the full first-class postage regardless of any rate increases since the stamps' purchase.
