World's first heart transplant 4/12/67 Mr.Louis Washkansky was the world's first heart transplant recipient at Groote Schuur hospital on Monday 4th December 1967. This fantastic operation was performed by Professor Chris Barnard and his team when they successfully transplanted the heart of Denise Darvall (killed by a car in Woodstock) into the chest of Mr. Washkansky. This photo of Mr. Washkansky in hospital, is to my knowledge the only known colour image in existence
