Griffith's experiment, reported in 1928 by Frederick Griffith, was one of the first experiments suggesting that bacteria are capable of transferring genetic information through a process known as #transformation. Griffith's findings were followed by research in the late 1930s and early 40s that isolated #DNA as the material that communicated this genetic information.
Fred Griffith and "Bobby" - This photograph is one of the few remaining of the English microbiologist who was killed in the Blitz in London in 1941. Although Griffith and Avery never met, the two scientists greatly respected each other's work on pneumococci transformation. Inscription on reverse reads "Snap-shot of Dr. Fred. Griffith and "Bobby" on the Downs near Brighton from Al Coburn."
