Junius George Groves was born in slavery, in 1859, in Louisville, KY. He came to Kansas as an Exoduster, purchasing 80 acres of land raise white potatoes and becamd known as the "Potato King of the World." In the early 1900s, he founded the community of Groves Center, near Edwardsville. He built a golf course for African Americans, possibly the first such course in the county. Junius Groves and Wife, Matilda, ca. 1895 Junius Groves, a successful, self-educated farmer, landowner, and entrepreneur, became one of the most prosperous African American men in the early twentieth century. He was born enslaved on April 12, 1859 in Green County, Kentucky. Much of Groves' success was due to his forty-six years of devotion to the science of agriculture. - See more at:
