Junius George Groves was born in slavery, in 1859, in Louisville, KY. He came to Kansas as an Exoduster, purchasing 80 acres of land raise white potatoes and becamd known as the "Potato King of the World." In the early 1900s, he founded the community of Groves Center, near Edwardsville. He built a golf course for African Americans, possibly the first such course in the county.
