At the beginning of the year, I love to have my kids complete a Heart Map in their writing journal. A Heart Map is a map of their heart,.

heart map- I used Nancie Atwell's concept of a heart map in the past, but I like this variation for younger students.

A heart map! Kids make a heart of things they love and refer to it during writing time. Great BOY project to place in their writer's notebook!

I’m trying to train my kids to use their heart maps when they need writing inspiration, so I keep my heart map by my easel and refer to it during every minilesson prior to writing. I like to pretend…VERY dramatically…that I have NOTHING to write about. The kids are quick to remind me that I can use my heart map for inspiration! They’re all, “DUH, Mrs. Carroll!!!” HA!

Heart Map: You make a map of things you love or things close to your heart and staple to the cover of your writing notebook; if you need an idea, look at your heart map!

The Best Story - Great idea for Writer's Workshop at the beginning of the year. It's great for teaching where writers get their ideas. In the end, the main character learns that the best story comes from your heart. After reading it, give each student a paper heart and they fill it with words/pictures of the things/people they love.

The Best Story by Eileen Spinelli (this book would be a great introduction to writing workshop or read-aloud for personal narrative)

My Heart Map. Students create a heart map in their writer's notebook as inspiration for their writing. 3 important people, 3 hobbies, 3 important places, 3 memories, and 3 important things. They will always have something to write about for a personal narrative.

Heart Mapping with kids - super for Valentine's Day and for Writing Workshop! Could allow students to make a mind map of everything they have written about so far in their Work on writing and then add new ideas for future stories

Heart Maps are one of my favorite things - great activity! I also love your idea about building reading stamina at home. I read your post and thought, "Duh! Why didn't I think of that?!" It makes so much sense and goes along perfectly with Daily 5. Thanks for sharing!
