On 10 October 1923 the first American-built rigid airship, USS Shenandoah (ZR 1), was christened. It used helium gas instead of hydrogen. In this image Shenandoah is moored to USS Patoka (AO 9), circa 1924-1925. NHHC photo NH 98222.
