Context Clues Craftivity

Students always need practice using context clues when reading. Teach five types of context clues with this reading activity: definition, synonym (restatement), antonym (contrast), example, and inference. Students read ten sentences and determine the meaning of the underlined words AND the type of context clue they used to identify the meaning. The finished product makes a great reading bulletin board.


When you go to buy bread in the grocery store, have you ever wondered which is the freshest, so you 'squeeze' for freshness or softness? Did you know that bread is delivered fresh to the stores five days a week? Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each day has a different color twist tie. They are: Monday = Blue Tuesday = Green Thursday = Red Friday = White Saturday = Yellow

By the time your students are finished with this unit, they will have memorized the meanings of these eighty-four common Greek and Latin roots. As a result, they will be able to figure out the meaning of thousands of English words. I made it about five years ago for 8th graders. Been using it ever since for a variety of grade levels!
