Black History Album .... The Way We Were — In the late 1800s, Robert Lloyd Smith, an advocate of Booker T. Washington’s philosophy of education and economic improvement for African-Americans, founded the Farmers’ Home Improvement Society (F.I.S.C.) to help tenant farmers out of a cycle of debt and poverty in Colorado County, Texas.
The Dotson School is one of the abandoned rural schoolhouses in Grainger County named to the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance's 2012 Endangered Heritage list. Used for hay storage and other agricultural uses since closing, the school is in good condition and could be restored as a home or business. (East Tennessee Preservation Alliance)
