Ian McEwan, The Cement Garden Everyone’s heard of Atonement (hey, didn’t that movie win an Oscar?) and likely Amsterdam, McEwan’s 1998 Man Booker winner. But much underrated is his first effort, 1978’s The Cement Garden, a taut, dark psychological novel about four children alone. He didn’t have that “Ian Macabre” nickname for nothing..
I saw the movie first, which is unusual for me. However, the movie was so good IMO, that I had to read the book. This book is also listed in the book "1000 Books you Should Read Before you Die" - thus it must be good! In may move into my favorites list.... Atonement...amazing book and movie.
“It wasn't only wickedness and scheming that made people unhappy, it was confusion and misunderstanding; above all, it was the failure to grasp the simple truth that other people are as real as you.” - Atonment by Ian McEwan #ianmcewan #fanart
