Inferring is a hard skill to teach and to assess. I found that my first grade students do so much better when I scaffold their instruction by giving them the inference and asking for the text. They finally began to be able to give me the inference when I gave them the text. We are still working on completing the entire graphic organizer independently, but this will be better to leave for 2nd and 3rd graders. This is a great way to introduce, practice and assess.

Oreo-cookie vs. cream commercial. Great social thinking activity. Why are they fighting? (most kids missed this). Problem vs. glitch? Did the reaction match the size of the problem? Great example for Glassman. 5 point scale for volume. Why were they whispering? Did their volume match the situation? Why was the commercial funny? Did it make you want to buy Oreos? Etc.
