On June 7, 1998 James Byrd, Jr. was murdered by three white men in Jasper, Texas.He was dragged behind a pickup truck and his body dumped in front of a local black cemetery. The crime led to passage of state and federal hate crimes laws. Lawrence Brewer was executed for the murder on September 21, 2011 and John King remains on death row while appeals are pending. Shawn Berry was sentenced to life imprisonment. #TodayInBlackHistory

Jasper - Bill McRay was born in Milas, fifteen miles north of San Augustine, Texas, in 1851. He is a brother of C.B. McRay . Col. McRay was his owner (the name may have been spelled McCray , Bill says). Bill now lives in Jasper, Texas. He is said to be an expert cook, having cooked for hotels, boats and military camps 40 years.

Alfred and Lauren Wright enrage Jasper Texas racist sheriff Maddox and his friends who lynch him and then cover up his murder in 2013! They call a cut throat, missing eyes, ears, tongue, teeth and a slit throat accidental death after calling off the search saying he ran off. The police went so far as to post on Lauren's face book page: "He's laid up drinking cold beer watching football some place warm!"
