Julie Andrews, although not American-born, has captured the hearts of Americans for over 25 years. Her film, "The Sound of Music," has become so Americanized, it is on every Christmas and is known be people across the life span.
Julie Andrews played the original Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady on Broadway. When Jack Warner was making the film adaptation, Julie was passed over for the role in favor of Audrey Hepburn, which made her available to accept Walt Disney's invitation to be Mary Poppins. Ironically, Julie Andrews and Audrey Hepburn squared off at the 22nd Annual Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress for their performances in Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady, respectively. Julie had the last laugh :)
