Jupiter Moons - Callisto discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610 using a telescope. It is thought to have oceans of liquid water beneath its crust. about the size of Mercury, is the 3rd largest moon in the solar system. It is more heavily cratered than any other moon in the solar system. Callisto remains as it was when it formed, during the period of intense meteoroid bombardment that the entire solar system experienced


Jupiter has 64 moons, and from top to bottom, the moons shown are Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.

Ganymede is Jupiter's largest moon, and is the largest moon in the Solar System, even slightly larger than the planet Mercury. It has a liquid iron core, a thick icy crust, and layers of silicate rock in between. There is also thought to be a saltwater ocean about 124 miles below the surface. It was discovered in the 1990s that Ganymede has a very thin oxygen atmosphere and an ozone layer.

The speckled object depicted here is Callisto, Jupiter’s second largest moon. This image was taken in May 2001 by NASA’s Galileo spacecraft, which studied Jupiter and its moons from 1995 until 2003.


NASA’s Juno Spacecraft will arrive at Jupiter in the next few day after nearly five years in space. While it’s purpose is primarily to study Jupiter’s origins, interior structure, deep atmosphere and magnetosphere, it’s worth remembering Jupiter is also host to the largest and some of the most interesting moons in the solar system.
