The old Parramatta General Hospital c1880.At the request of Governor Lachlan MacQuarie,a new convict hospital was built in Parramatta and opened in 1818.Designed by John Watts,the building was based on a military hospital and proved to be grossly inadequate.Only half of the expected number of patients could be treated here.Men and women were placed side by side,and diseases such ad dysentery,tuberculosis and syphilis were rife.The hospital was officially closed on 31 March 1848 and reopened…
