The largest land turtle that ever existed was Testudo atlas (“Atlas tortoise”), also known as Colossochelys (“colossal turtle”). 8 feet long and 6 feet high, it probably weighed around 4 tons. Looking much like a modern Galápagos tortoise, this giant chelonian herbivore lived in the Pleistocene period—Like its modern relatives, T. atlas could probably retract its legs and head into its shell when threatened

In Kunming, there was an 84-year-old woman patiently trailing behind her land turtle everyday. "I have been walking my turtle for 20 years," the turtle owner, surnamed Liu, told reporters. A staff of the local animal shelter identified that the turtle is an Impressed Tortoise (Manouria impressa) as a national grade II animal for key protection. If Li give up her pet, the animal shelter will adopt it. 2011-10-12
