Redwoods - Merle Axelrad

Redwoods_2-I create landscapes made from thousands of tiny pieces of fabric. Fragments of woven color and texture are carefully arranged, layered, pinned and sewn together. In my fabric collages, I distill a place to its essence, and to this end each piece of fabric is carefully selected to make an individual contribution.(500×750)

Viewer’s Choice and Random Prize Winners–My Favorite Fabric Project QUILTING Challenge

Lia*s Handmades: "Beneath a Silver Light" - Owl quilt

Hey all! 2015's Project Quilting is now over, 12 weeks of brainstorming, sewing and prize winning. And the 6 challenges posted in this season were more successful for me than I could've hoped or wished for. In fact, I was left surprised quite a few times, which is why I wanted to do a little recap of all my 6 entries that I made for the challenges. Some were really a bit challenging as I needed a moment to figure out and decide what to make, some were created with techniques I had not used before, some turned into pieces that I really love and adore now and am proud of making. And that isn't just because all of them ended in the top 3 of the viewer's choice votings of each challenge week. That part only made me more proud of having come up with something that other people enjoyed just as much and I'm truly thankful for everyone who took the time to vote! Thank you! Here is my recap of season 6 of Project Quilting and all my challenge entries, including the votes and places they received in the public voting. If you want to read the stories about how I created these, simply click on the project name underneath the pictures and you will be forwarded to the originals posts. "Four Seasons" Challenge 1 - Trees 1st place in Viewer's Choice Voting with 146 votes "Morning in the Moor" Challenge 2 - Sunrise/Sunset 2nd place in Viewer's Choice Voting with 226 votes "Cupcake O'Hare" Challenge 3 - UFO's and Orphan Blocks 2nd place in Viewer's Choice Voting with 99 votes "Love is Equal" Challenge 4 - Have a Heart 3rd place in Viewer's Choice Voting with 125 votes "Beneath a Silver Light" Challenge 5 - My Favourite Fabric 1st place in Viewer's Choice Voting with 164 votes "Summer Garden" Challenge 6 - Isn't that Charming? 3rd place in Viewer's Choice Voting with 129 votes That's my recap of this season and it was a really successful one in my books. I learned a lot about myself and my workmanship in these challenges, tried new things I've not done before, and also learned from a couple mistakes.  I'm definitely looking forward to next year and joining in again.  There were also several nice prizes that I won. Two small boxes of Aurifil, a calendar from our host Kim Lapacek, several patterns from the Quilting Gallery and a gorgeous keyring. Not bad, so the hard work payed off! ;) Now it's onto new sewing adventures and of course a few swaps, as I can never seem to resist. Speaking of swaps...check back for a swap announcement later as I am currently hosting my quick and easy Fabric Scrap Swap again.  Talk soon! xx Lia

Quilts In The Wolds

On Saturday I went to a local quilt show with DD.  The show was the second "Quilts in the Wolds" show organised by Lindsey Patchworkers.  This is a hanging that a group of members created for Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it shows many of the attractions of the region. DD and I were both focussed on water/seascape related projects, and even choose the same piece as our "visitors' choice".  Our photographs are mainly along this theme.  As ever, if you are in a picture and would rather not be or if you object to my sharing the work you exhibited please email me and I will remove it immediately. These miniature seascapes are by Sandra Goldsbrough: This usual perspective on Stonehaven Harbour by Pat Cave  was inspired by a workshop with Janet Browne:   This unusual presentation, of the wonderfully named Barefoot Beach near Naples in Florida,  was stitched by Gill Lewis.  It was difficult to take a photograph but the detail in the work  was lovely, it was as if it was possible to walk right onto the beach. There were two traders, a sales table, a raffle and a tombola.  All the prizes in the tombola were "inspiration bags", gorgeous colour co-ordinated collections of fabric, thread, beads, ribbon etc.  Sara and I had several goes on the tombola and came away with three bags of inspiration between us.  Oh, and there was cake :-)  Well done Lindsey Patchworkers, a great exhibition and DD bought loads of fabric and is really inspired to get stitching again now that she has finished studying for a couple of months.  For more pictures have a look at the report from Louth Eye (and interestingly, no pictures of seascapes!)  Just a couple of looking and buying pictures to finish:
