Last Glacial Maximum - A map of sea surface temperature changes and glacial extent during the last glacial maximum according to the CLIMAP project. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), vast ice sheets covered much of North America, northern Europe and Asia. These ice sheets profoundly affected Earth's climate, causing drought, desertification and a dramatic drop in sea levels. It was followed by the Late Glacial Maximum.

Cave Bear Skull. Ursus Spelaeus meaning "cave" where theses bears lived most of their lives unlike the brown bear that used caves for hibernation. They lived in Europe during the Pleistocene and became extinct at the beginning of the Last Glacial Maximum, about 27,500 years ago.

Smile it's Smilodon! Better known to us as the Saber Tooth Tiger this relative of our modern day felines hunted big game during the last glacial period. However as their prey went extinct or evolved into quicker more nimble species the Smilodon too was forced into evolution or extinction. All the most amazing supernovas ever photographed

Cygnus Loop (also known as the Veil Nebula) - formed after a shockwave propagated through the material ejected during the supernova - subsequently heating up the surrounding material - causing it to glow. The nebula, which covers an expanse of space that is 6 times larger than the full moon, is ~ 2,500 light-years from Earth in Cygnus. Astronomers believe the supernova ignited 5-10,000 years ago; the light from the event first arrived on Earth at the end of the last ice age.

Pudding stone from Lake Huron in Michigan. This is a conglomerate of stones set in sandstone and hardened over years and years. The red in the stone is Jasper. There are all kinds of stones in them and are just beautiful.

Minnesota designated Lake Superior agate as the official state gemstone in 1969. An unusually beautiful quartz stone banded with rich red and orange colors (derived from iron ore in the soil), Lake Superior agates were dispersed by glaciers in the last Ice Age. Found in northeastern and north central Minnesota, most Lake Superior agates are pea-size but some are as big as bowling balls and weigh over 20 pounds.

The Megatherium was a giant ground sloth found in South America during the Pliocene. It weighed up to four tons and was twenty feet (6m) in length from head to tail. Although it primarily moved on four legs, footprints show that it was capable of being bipedal, in order to reach leaves from the tallest trees. It seemed to be a scavenger and was also one of the last giant Ice Age mammals to disappear. Their remains appear in the fossil record as recently as the Holocene.
