Louie Bellson, regarded by many as one of the greatest drummers of his era. He worked with such legends as Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Duke Ellington during a career of more than 60 years. I saw him in concert at Howard University in 1970 with the U.S. Navy Jazz Band. His wife singer Pearl Bailey sat right behind us. All the hardware on his drums were gold plated. "Not only is Louie Bellson the world’s greatest drummer he’'s the world’s greatest musician!" ~~ Duke Ellington

I absolutely ADORE this photo of Newport News (Virginia) native, Pearl Bailey and Louie Bellson! #OneLove <3

Pearl Mae Bailey was a famous actress and singer and Louie Bellson was a famous jazz drummer, composer and bandleader. Bellson was Duke Ellington’s first white musician and met Bailey after being introduced by a trombone player. After a courtship lasting just four days they were married, in London.
