A simple question about why the USA (together with Liberia and Burma) is still measuring in miles, yards and inches, pints and cups, acres, Fahrenheit etc., lead me to this very interesting article: "The Metric System, the United States of America, and Scientific Literacy." I learned f.i. that the Metric Conversion Act from 1975 was more or less vetoed by president Reagan in 1982.
When it comes to measurement, the use of the Metric System and the U.S. Standard Measurement System has long been discussed. While a large majority of the world’s countries use the Metric System, there are still a handful which adhere to the U.S. Standard. These differences can indeed result in a disaster in the kitchen if you do not know how to convert the measurements!
