NOBEL PEACE PRIZE ~ President Barack Obama donated the $ 1.4 million from his Nobel Peace Prize to helping students, veterans' families & survivors of Haiti's earthquake, among others, drawing attention to organizations he said that "do extraordinary work." Obama gave a total of $ 750,000 to 6 groups that help kids go to college, $ 250,000 to Fisher's House (which provides housing for families with loved ones @U.S. Veterans Administration hospitals), & $ 200,000 to earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

Jane Addams (1860-1936) - First American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She was a leader in the Suffrage movement and co-founder (with Ellen Gates Starr) of Hull House, an institution set up in the poor neighborhood of Chicago to provide services for recent immigrants - such as daycare and classes in music and literature.
