Apache Solr is actually used in a lot of enterprise projects, public projects powered by Solr.Solr is also useful for scientific applications, such as a DNA search systems. Solr can also be used for completely different alphabets so that we can query nucleotide sequences - instead of words - to get the matching genes and determine which organism the sequence occurs in, something similar to Blast.
