A Survey of Gee’s Bend Quilts — The University of Mississippi Museum Gee’s Bend is a small rural community nestled into a curve in the Alabama River southwest of Selma, Alabama. After the Civil War, the freed slaves of Gee’s Bend founded an all-black community nearly isolated from the surrounding world.
MWP: Myrlie Evers-Williams (1933- ) widow of Medgar Evers, who in 1963 was gunned down in the driveway of his home in Jackson, MS. In the years since Mrs. Evers continued to wage a lonely war to keep her husband’s memory and dreams alive and to bring his killer to justice. Her diligence eventually paid off when white supremacist Byron De la Beckwith, was brought to trial for a third time and, in 1994, was found guilty of the murder of Medgar Evers…
